Optimus, Vodafone accept fibre network sharing (Portugal)

Portuguese cellcos Optimus and Vodafone Portugal have reportedly signed an agreement to launch a shared fibre network in the cities of Lisbon and Porto.

The partnership will enable each company to launch its own independent commercial services as early as next year. According to Optimus, this partnership will allow the two operators to achieve commercial offerings under the new framework, in the first quarter of 2011. Optimus and Vodafone believe that the current agreement - under which the networks remain the property of each company - will generate synergies and offer a simplified solution for the realization of their previously announced partnership.

Additional, both companies have admitted that they are open to the idea of sharing the network with other Portuguese operators.

According to previous reports, in December 2009 Vodafone reached an agreement with Optimus’ parent company Sonaecom, regarding mutual cooperation in the construction, management, maintenance and operation of a fibre-optic next generation network (NGN) in the main urban centres of Portugal. The agreement formed part of the government-backed US$576.2 million broadband development scheme, which was first announced in December 2009.

India cellcos face 3G data ban over security fears

A senior from department of telecom has revealed that the government will prevent telcos from offering non-voice 3G Mobile services in seven days, unless they demonstrate that these facilities can be tapped live.
The 3G data services that could be impacted include high-speed internet, download of music and video clips, chat and internet telephony calls. Until now, state-run telcos BSNL and MTNL and private players such as Reliance Communications (RCOM) and Tata Teleservices have launched 3G services on mobiles, while Bharti Airtel was slated to begin offering them by the year-end.

DoT last week stopped video-calling services citing security concerns at the home ministry’s behest, as these can be traced only a few minutes after they have ended. While intelligence agencies complain that such calls cannot be monitored live, executives with telcos say there is no technology available globally for real-time tapping of video calls.

According to a source, during a meeting on Monday among representatives of telcos, the home ministry and security agencies, the Intelligence Bureau had sought a temporary ban on all 3G data services. But, operators have been given up to seven days to demonstrate that data services can be tapped in real time, failing which the services will be disallowed. IB officials too have stated that they will discuss internally some of the proposals suggested by telcos during Monday’s meeting, and come back within the next couple of days.
According to sources - if they need to go through an equipment retesting drill, services will be delayed for at least six to eight weeks.

The New BlackBerry Torch 9800 enters the smartphone market

The BlackBerry Torch is the latest release from BlackBerry looking to penetrate the fiercely competitive touchscreen Smartphone Market; a segment of the Mobile phone market which has grown exponentially in the last twelve months, so much so that it is now recognized as a market of its own.

This is not the first time that BlackBerry have attempted to enter this market however, two previous models in the form of the Storm and Storm 2 looked to try and grab a piece of the market albeit quite unsuccessfully, largely due to their unique and quite unusual piezo 'clickable' touchscreens which received very mixed reviews.

The Torch on the Other hand, really distances itself from the Storm; it is BlackBerry's first slider incorporating both a touchscreen and a physical QWERTY keyboard, essentially 'the best of both worlds'. It is a concept that puts the Torch in quite a large bit of 'middle ground' sitting between the iPhones/ HTC Desire HDs of this world and BlackBerry's own Curve/Bold series. It creates an interesting debate as to whether the need for such a device exists, but if early sales figures and reviews are any reflection on the future, then it certainly looks as though the Torch will be lighting the way.

The reason for the encouraging reviews is quite clear when you look in a bit more detail at the specifications of this device; a 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen capable of displaying 16 million colours at a resolution of 360 x 480 pixels, a full BlackBerry QWERTY keyboard, 4GB of internal storage, microSD support, microUSB port, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 5 megapixel camera and of course, the latest iteration of BlackBerry software " OS 6.0 which has been heavily optimised for touchscreen use.

Of course, as with any BlackBerry, the real attraction of the Torch is the exceptional push email services and BlackBerry Messenger; features which will essentially let you instantly message any other BlackBerry user, anywhere in the world. There is also access to third party applications thanks to BlackBerry Appworld, BlackBerry's answer to the App Store in which you'll find a huge selection of games and applications ranging from horoscopes to Sudoku and everything in between.

Aside from all of the features and specifications mentioned above, the Torch is quite possibly the best looking addition to the BlackBerry family with its compact looking design and sleek curves it really is a good looking phone from any angle and is a welcome break from the usual Smartphone form factor adopted by the likes of HTC, Apple, Samsung et al.

Aircel challenges against hike in spectrum usage charge (India)

A leading telecom operator Aircel has joined with Other three service providers -- Bharti, Vodafone and Idea -- and moved Supreme Court against hike in spectrum usage charge.

According to reports, the bench, headed by Chief Justice SH Kapadia, has now sought a response from the Department of Telecommunications ( DoT)on the matter, and a date of 27 January 2011 has been set for hearing not only Aircel’s case, but also the petitions from the other three aforementioned cellcos.

The development comes after reports last month that the Supreme Court had stayed an order made by the TDSAT which upheld increases in the charges for 2G spectrum usage. The ruling followed an appeal against TDSAT’s decision by the three GSM operators, prompted by the DoT’s February 2010 unveiling of revised spectrum charges for both GSM and CDMA operators; the DoT proposed an increase of up to 50%, with the charge rising to between 3% and 8% of revenue.

Vodafone has to pay US$30.01 million and the two Bharti firms have a joint liability of US$48.92 milion on account of enhanced spectrum usage charges.

Apple, Google asked to pay as operators face data overflow

The European Mobile operators have stated that Google Inc., Apple Inc., and Facebook Inc. need to set in to help pay for the billions of dollars of network investments needed for their bandwidth-hogging services.

As mobile and Web companies add videos, music and games, operators including France telecom SA, Telecom Italia SpA and Vodafone Group Plc want a new deal that would require content providers like Apple and Google to pay fees linked to usage.

As per France Telecom Chief Executive Officer Stephane Richard previous statement, service providers are flooding networks with no incentive to cut costs. It’s necessary to put in place a system of payments by service providers as a function of their use.

Richard has joined Telecom Italia CEO Franco Bernabe and Telefonica SA CEO Cesar Alierta in what could turn into a cold war with Web companies. As more consumers access the Internet on mobile devices, the cost of building bigger networks may outstrip revenue growth for wireless operators, slicing their return on investment.

According to Bernabe, the mismatch between investments and revenue is set to compromise the economic sustainability of the current business model for telecom companies.

According to research firm Canalys, while the number of mobile data connections in Western Europe will rise by an average of 15% a year to 270 million in 2014, overall end-user revenue will decline about 1% a year, Interactive Data Corp. estimates. In the same period, operators’ annual spending on network gear will surge 28% compared with last year to about $3.7 billion.

Smartphones and Tablets will eclipse computers in 2012

Market research major IDC has predicted that smartphones and tablets are in things today and their shipments will overtake PC shipment in the next 18 months, i.e. precisely by June 2012. If reports are to be believed, the United Kingdom is slowly moving away from PCs and going towards Mobile devices. However, this is all about development of a new market of smartphones and tablets and in no way it means that PCs would be shunned. They would still be a main part of computing.

IDC also added that the total number of shipments of app-enabled devices such as smartphones and tablets all over the world would Touch a 284 million mark. And the projected figures for 2011 and 2012 are 377 million and 462 million respectively. This figure would easily exceed that of PC shipments. For those who are uninitiated, one shipment equals one device.

The company also predicted that the PC shipments to be about 356 million this year as well as 402 million and 448 million for 2011 and 2012 respectively.

According to Frank Gens, Chief Analyst, IDC, non-PC devices are not replacing the PC " that’s a key point " but they are expanding the market. He also reveals the similarities between the start of the PC ERA and what is happening today with smartphones and tablets.

He further added, the IBM Personal computer arrived in 1981, but it wasn’t until 1986 that vendors stopped debating the future of the PC and rushed toward it. A major turning point for the PC was the 1986 initial public offering of Microsoft, a company quickly embraced by Wall Street. The PC era resulted in the emergence of new companies and the loss of older ones that didn’t adapt to the market change. Today, through acquisitions and Other moves, vendors are positioning themselves for the new smartphone and tablet market.

Samsung expects higher Q4 profit margin

Samsung Electronics Co is expecting better profit margins from Mobile phones in the current quarter on strong sales of smartphones and expects global handset market growth to come in below 10% next year.
The company still has a few weeks to go to wrap the current quarter but the overall direction of telecom profit margins will be upward and it'll be better than the third quarter, although it won't be a sharp improvement, according to J.K. Shin, President of Samsung's telecom division.
Shin expected the global handset market to grow less than 10% next year but shipments of smartphones would exceed the overall mobile industry's growth rate. Samsung, a laggard in the booming smartphone industry,  it had sold 5 million units of "Wave" smartphones based on its own proprietary operating system called bada and plans to sell another 5 million units of the series in the next six months.
The mid-ranged priced model is aimed at sharply boosting overall smartphone shipments of Samsung, which nearly tripled its market share to around 9% to become the world's No.4 smartphone producer last quarter on robust sales of Wave and Galaxy S models.

Difficult to compare CDMA with GSM phones

GSM mobile phones prove cheaper in the long run: No one does anything for anyone for free; this is true for mobile carriers as well. The main reason they offer you mobile phones at discounted rates is because by providing you a CDMA phone they get in a position where they can charge you heavier than normal tariffs.

By the time you discover this, it will be too late. The CDMA phone provided will not let you put in a SIM card of any other wireless carrier and trying to back out of the plan will usually cost you once you decide to discontinue with CDMA as the handset is also not of any use.

GSM mobile phones give you immense freedom: The best part of GSM cell phones is that they can be used with any mobile carrier. Just insert the SIM card. This capability gives you an upper hand over the wireless carriers and generally increases your chances of getting a better plan. Additionally, if any other mobile carrier comes up with an altogether low-tariff plan, you can easily switch over.

GSM mobile phones are great for International roamers: For those who go foreign a lot, GSM mobile phones provide with an opportunity to cut on the high roaming charges by inserting a SIM card of a local carrier.

GSM mobile phones offer a wider range: As compared to the limited range available with wireless carriers, one can choose from the hundreds of GSM phones available: unlocked Motorola mobile phones, unlocked Nokia mobile phones, unlocked Blackberry mobile phones, unlocked LG, unlocked Sony, to name a few.

Unlocked mobile phones have a higher resale value: When it comes to upgrading you mobile phone, unlocked mobile phones put you in an advantageous position. You get more out of an unlocked mobile phone as compared to locked one.

To summarize, unlocked mobile phones may appear costlier at the first sight, however, in the longer run they prove cheaper and give you an upper hand while dealing with wireless carriers.

Comparion of i phone with other mobile carriers available.

There is a List of mobile network operators but getting the right service and the most economic one as per your utility is one of the most difficult task. If you are a kind of person who keep looking options for ringtones, then I phone is deffinately one of the best options from the List of mobile network operators.

There has been a big conflict growing up ever since the launch of the iPhone. iPhone users can get a song through iTunes for a very small amount, add on a few pennies, and eventually get a ringtone at the minimum cost. This is great because iTunes has tons of songs from every artist imaginable, and converting songs to ringtones is just as easy.

But other mobile carriers currently charge a huge amount per ringtone and specially for the activation of the service. The idea of iphone to reduce the cost of different services to create a loyal customer base and fetch more people from the other mobile carriers. The feature packed iPhone was one big reason for the switch, but with cheaper ringtones, the reasons appear to have increased manifold.

If you look at the Indian music market, you'll find that the share of ringtones in the revenue of music companies has been increasing steadily over the yearsand for the wireless carriers also, even as revenue from album sales goes down. The way the current trends are going, this doesn't sound very inconceivable or difficult to achieve that the wireless carriers will offer the free calls and will only generate the revenue through ring tones.

How Does a Cellular Phone Work ?

Wireless carriers use a system of areas or "cells" that are being executed by radio communications for managing the connections of all the calls made by mobile of their customers. They also track the footprint of each cell so that the can define the location and size of the call made. As the mobile phone moves, the call is dropped by the cell being exited and simultaneously picked up by the cell being entered. This switching takes place automatically and is transparent to the user. The radio cells range in size from 100 yards (100 meters) in busy downtown corridors to several miles (10 kilometers) in rural areas.

For the transmission of these cells, mobile carriers takes help through antennas. These are placed at high places so that they will be able to catch the signals. There is a List of mobile network operators which use the same platform for installing there antennas. The antennas can be mounted on freestanding towers, poles, rooftops, lamp posts, trees or flagpoles. Antennas are often integrated into the design of the buildings and surroundings.

There is a List of mobile network operators who do not have the surving capacity accorss the country. So they keep sharing there signals which in lay man's terms we call roaming. However, still sometime sthe signals gets intrupted because of huge buildings or trees or could be any other situaion. The Wireless Industry Association

Wireless Industry Association, originally was formed as an international industry trade group representing all wireless communication sectors including cellular, personal communication services and enhanced specialized mobile radio. The concept of such association was initially started in 1982 in U.S. Wireless Industry Association primarily represents the interests of wireless telecommunications companies. Their board is a mix of service providers, manufacturers and wireless data companies, mobile network operators, as well as other contributors to the wireless industry. Mobile operators association operates the industry's leading trade shows, and provides equipment testing and hardware certification programs.

In late 2009, one of the mobile operators associationt CTIA advocated to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for the destruction of over-the-air terrestrial television, which was just forced through a very expensive transition, so that its members could takeover the UHF radio spectrum for their own use. The National Association of Broadcasters and MSTV countered by noting that it is a waste of bandwidth to stream multiple copies of a TV show that could instead be watched on a mobile TV broadcast. The new free-to-air ATSC-M/H mobile standard for TV stations is competition to its own members' pay TV business model (FLO TV and video on demand).

Mobile operator association mandate to expand and enhance the online and mobile value added services sectors. It is dedicated to presenting a unified voice of the businesses it represents to the government, investors, consumers and other stakeholders. The association addresses the issues, concerns and challenges of the Internet and Mobile economy and takes a leading role in its development.

The Wireless Industry is at the Boom

We might have been noticing that the wireless industry is at the boom. However. Is this a temporary slip, or is this a sign the industry is changing? We've been watching the numbers of subscribers jump year after year. But we have to concerned about the scenario when there will be no new user of cell phone and the industry will have no more scope. Till date, the market place is maturing and people know the carriers they like and why they like them.

Wireless has always been a growth business, but going forward it may not be anymore. Not the way we have traditionally thought of wireless and growth anyway. Growth in the more traditional parts of the business is slowing. That's the bad news. However the good news is growth in other areas is increasing.

- We are seeing growth from traditional voice slowing, but growth from wireless data is continuing to explode.

- In addition there are many other new areas that will represent enormous growth opportunities going forward. Watch the wireless industry help other industries reduce their costs and improve their position in the customers mind using wireless technology.

It depends on how you look at the situation and which glasses you wear. If you are an employee or investor looking for the same traditional growth patterns we have seen over the last decade or two they unfortunately are slowing. That was inevitable. This could mean lots of change in coming years like potential job cuts in certain areas. However if you are looking for the new growth patterns, they are many. Just look at the rapid growth of the smart phone segment. Since Apple introduced the first iPhone a few short years ago the wireless data and smart phone segment has exploded.

Other handset makers and many new apps are part of the mix. There are enormous growth opportunities in this area. In addition every other industry is looking at wireless to transform parts of their business. Ford is putting Internet access on the dashboard of their cars. Power companies are putting wireless meter readers in the marketplace so they don't have to send people out in cars every day. The medical and health industry is embracing wireless to transform themselves.

Industry after industry is looking to let wireless bring them into the future. There are unlimited new opportunities, but they often come from the least likely areas. Many times wireless opportunities come from non-traditional places like other companies. So yes traditional growth in wireless, the fast growing industry we have followed during the last decade or two is finally slowing. That is the bad news. At the same time, the good news is growth in wireless is still occurring in other areas.

Wireless technology is the technology for transmitting information

Wireless technology is the technology for transmitting information from one place to another without the medium of wires. This distance could be small or it could be long as thousands of miles. Initially this technique was developed for telecommunications.

It comprises of various machines like fixed phones, mobiles, two way radio, personal digital assistance, GPS etc. Basically all these equipments work on electromagnetic waves. This technique is used in our day to day life. Infact, most of our work is done by these machines for example imagine a television without remote, you will have to change the channel manually, imagine your life without emailing or without telephone. Wireless gaming, wireless mouse, keyboards are also some of the examples.

Wireless communication may be executed using three different mediums:
  1. Radio frequency communication
  2. Microwave communication
  3. Infrared for short range applications like remote controls

Sometimes people confuse themselves with wireless and codeless wherein these two are typically different from each other.
